I am directed by the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury to acknowledge the receipt of Mr. Read's letter of the 1st instant (22878/1912) forwarding a copy
of a despatch from the Officer Administering the Government of Hong Kong in which he suggests that the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation should be permitted to increase their issue of $1 notes from 226,000 to 350,000.
In returning the original enclosure which accom- panied Mr. Read's letter I am to refer to Their Lordships' reply of to-day's date
reply of to-day's date to Sir H.Just's letter of the 13th
you January last (41096/11) in which My Lords give reasons for
not assenting to the proposal contained therein for an issue of $1 notes by the Government of Hong Kong, and I am to say that, if the Secretary of State desires to recommend the present proposal of the Colonial Government, My Lords will be prepared to give it Their favourable consideration.
